Club pulls spectators trackside

THE chequered flag came perilously close to falling on this Wynnum racing club in January when its numbers plummeted to just 15 diehard members.

Now it is a unique drawcard on bayside.

Meet the members of the Bayside Radio Control Car Club, who race small cars but pull in big crowds.

A $5000 investment into refurbishing the track, lighting and spectator facilities coupled with council upgrades to the carpark and toilets have given the club a new lease on life.

There are now 45 members and at a recent race beat an all-time participation record from across all four radio control clubs in the greater Brisbane area was smashed.

Those race meets are highly competitive, but the regular fortnight race nights on Saturdays are far more social, with more and more young people participating as part of the club’s new 21.5 Kids Club.

And all these factors have made the club toast of the southeast Queensland radio-controlled racing scene, with people coming from as far as Logan and Brendale to test their cars on what they rate as being the region’s best track.

Race days are held every second Saturday from 5pm and the club hosted the Queensland titles last weekend from Friday to Sunday.
